School Van Driver Killed In Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer In Salem

SALEM, PA – A multi-vehicle wreck in Westmoreland County on Friday morning left one driver dead and another injured, according to a TribLIVE report.

The incident, involving a school van, an SUV, and a tractor-trailer, took place at the intersection of U.S. Route 22 and Pennsylvania Route 819 in Salem.  Pennsylvania State Police said the drivers of the van and the SUV were waiting at stop lights and proceeded into the intersection when the light turned green. The driver of a tractor-trailer went through a red light and crashed into the other vehicles.

The driver of the Greensburg Salem school district van, a 60-year-old Hempfield man, was killed in the accident. No students were on board at the time. The driver of the SUV, a 17-year-old high school student, was hospitalized in stable condition.

State Police are investigating the incident and said that at this point, there are no signs of a mechanical malfunction with the truck. They did say that the bright sun at the time could have been a contributing factor.

In a letter to parents, school district Superintendent Ken Bissell said, “As a school community, we understand the impact of such a loss and encourage those who need support to reach out,” adding that school counselors and staff were available Friday to help any students or staff members in coping with the tragedy.
