PITTSBURGH, PA – Icy roadways led to numerous vehicle crashes in the Pittsburgh area during Tuesday morning’s rush hour, according to KDKA Radio.
Frigid temperatures that moved into the region created treacherous driving conditions, particularly west of the city. At least 13 vehicles were involved in one of the accidents, along the outbound Parkway West near the Carnegie exit. Another multi-vehicle crash on I-79 southbound at Exit 54 (PA 50, Bridgeville) at about 7:30 a.m. shut down all lanes.
Other crashes occurred near the Airport, Oakmont, Bridgeville and other areas. Pennsylvania State Police said Pittsburgh troopers responded to a total of 37 interstate crashes during the morning. State Police said they were working with PennDOT and tow truck companies to clear the collisions on I-79 and I-376.
Roads were reported to be especially hazardous on bridge overpasses and off-ramps. There were no immediate reports of any major injuries.
