Authorities Respond to Crash, Fire Involving Hit-and-Run Driver at South Side Flats Gas Station

PITTSBURGH, PA – A Pittsburgh police officer was taken to the hospital following a fiery crash and physical struggle with a DUI suspect late last Friday in the city’s South Side Flats neighborhood, reports the City of Pittsburgh Public Safety Blotter.

Authorities said the suspect had caused and fled a two-vehicle crash in an alley behind the Coen Markets convenience store. Shortly after, he fled the wreck and crashed his car into one of the pumps at the Amoco gas station near the store, prompting a response from police, fire crews, and EMS personnel at around 11:20 p.m.

While the driver of the victim vehicle was not reported hurt, the suspect was outside of his vehicle by the time emergency responders arrived and engaged in a fight with officers.

One officer had to go to an area hospital after sustaining a hand injury, and firefighters had to put out a fire near the gas pumps that was set off by the crash.

Investigators noted that the suspect, who appeared to be impaired by drugs and/or alcohol, was taken into custody and evaluated at the hospital.

An investigation remains in progress.
