PITTSBURGH, PA – A car accident in Pittsburgh’s Swisshelm Park neighborhood on Friday morning claimed the life of a driver, reports KDKA.
An investigation found that the driver of a Mazda SUV was traveling on Parkway East and exiting the Squirrel Hill Tunnel at about 8:30 a.m. The vehicle then went over a hillside near the Commercial Street Bridge and landed several hundred feet down into the Nine Mile Run creek.
The driver, a 49-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was reported to have been a teacher in the Penn Hills School District.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the cause of the wreck, which reduced traffic on eastbound I-376 at the Squirrel Hill Tunnel to one lane for over two hours.
